Abstract

This study aims to improve guitar performance skills through the application of modal interchange chord techniques among music-interest students at SMAN 3 Kupang. The problem underlying this research is the students’ limited ability to develop chords when accompanying songs, as they tend to rely solely on basic chords, resulting in monotonous accompaniment. The modal interchange chord technique is used as an alternative to enrich harmonic color and enhance students’ creativity in playing the guitar. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The research subjects consist of three students of SMAN 3 Kupang who have basic guitar-playing skills. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. The learning process is carried out through imitation and drill methods implemented in stages, starting from the introduction of chords, chord progressions, modal interchange chord techniques, fingering, guitar picking patterns, to the application of these techniques in the song “Indonesia Pusaka.” The results show that the application of modal interchange chord techniques is able to improve students’ ability to develop chord progressions, enrich harmonic textures, and enhance fluency and neatness in guitar performance. Students demonstrate a better understanding of chord variations and are able to apply them more expressively when accompanying songs. Therefore, the modal interchange chord technique can be considered an effective alternative learning method to improve guitar performance quality among music-interest students.
