Abstract

In the learning process, there are still many students who are still learning to play the guitar by imitating without reading musical symbols or understanding the playing pattern independently. One of the relevant techniques to be applied is through the chord tablature reading technique. The problems raised in the research are how the process of applying the guitar chord tablature reading technique in the song model "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran to first semester guitar students at Widya Mandira Catholic University Kupang, what are the difficulties faced by first semester guitar students at Widya Mandira Catholic University Kupang in applying the guitar chord tablature reading technique in the song "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran, how can solutions be done in applying the guitar chord tablature reading technique in the song "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran to improve the guitar playing skills of first semester guitar students at Widya Mandira Catholic University Kupang This study also aims to describe the process of applying the technique of reading guitar chord tablature in the song model "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran to first semester guitar students at Widya Mandira Catholic University, Kupang, Describe the difficulties faced by first semester guitar students at Widya Mandira Catholic University, Kupang in applying the technique of reading guitar chord tablature in the song model "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran, find out and explain the solutions that can be used in applying the technique of reading guitar chord tablature in the song model "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran to improve the guitar playing ability of first semester guitar students at Widya Mandira Catholic University, Kupang. The approach used in this study is a qualitative approach with a field research method. The research subjects were ten first-semester guitar students. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, documentation, and learning practices during twelve meetings. The results of the study indicate that the application of guitar chord tablature reading techniques through the song Perfect can help students understand the fingering techniques for plucking and pressing strings, how to read tablature, the accuracy of chord changes, finger positions, how to maintain a stable chord progression tempo, and the flow of the song. Obstacles found included tempo instability, difficulty in chord changes, and lack of finger strength in pressing the strings. To overcome these obstacles, repeated practice (drill method), providing examples of playing with a slow tempo, and guidance on proper fingering techniques were carried out. Thus, the technique of reading guitar chord tablature using the song Perfect has proven effective in improving students' guitar playing abilities gradually and independently.
