Abstract

The undergraduate thesis titled “Improving Diaphragmatic Breathing Ability In The Song ‘Broken Vow’ Among Third-Semester Vocal Interest Students Of The Music Education Study Program, Unwira Kupang” was written by Yovita Febrianti Bupu (17122119) under the supervision of Paskalis Romanus Langgu, S.Sn., M.Art (Advisor I) and Kadek Paramitha Hariswari, S.Pd., M.Pd. (Advisor II). Music Education is one of the study programs at the Catholic University of Widya Mandira Kupang, in which students participate in various activities, including the vocal interest program. One of the common challenges experienced by students in singing is the breathing technique. The problems addressed in this study are: (1) How is the process of improving the quality of diaphragmatic breathing in the song Broken Vow among third-semester vocal interest students of the Music Education Study Program at UNWIRA? (2) What benefits do students gain from the learning process of improving the quality of diaphragmatic breathing in the song Broken Vow? The objectives of this study are: (1) To determine the process of improving diaphragmatic breathing in the song Broken Vow among third-semester vocal interest students of the Music Education Study Program at UNWIRA; (2) To discover the benefits students gain from the learning process of enhancing diaphragmatic breathing quality. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show an improvement in the application of diaphragmatic breathing techniques. This improvement occurred due to gradual training beginning with an explanation of the concept of diaphragmatic breathing and breath control. The researcher demonstrated the technique and breath control, followed by asking the students to imitate and apply it to the song. The implementation of diaphragmatic breathing was carried out step by step, from the beginning to the end of the song. During the process, students faced several challenges, including difficulty applying diaphragmatic breathing to long phrases, maintaining vocal stability, and controlling breath usage. The solution implemented was continuous and repetitive practice. In conclusion, the imitation and drill methods were effective in improving students’ diaphragmatic breathing quality.
