Abstract
The Soil-bass is a traditional one-stringed musical instrument that is played by striking the string that is strechted across the surface of the hole in the soil which resonates the sound. However, the soil-bass is now threatened with extinction because many young Sikka people rarely know about this musical instrument. Therefore, there are 2 focuses in this research, namely: first, studying the organology consisting of basic materials, manufacturing processes, and the size of the hole (resonator). The second is the form of presentation of the soil-bass musical instrument. The aim of this research is to examine the organology of the traditional bass musical instrument and the form of presentation of the instrument. This research uses a qualitatively descriptive approach using ethnographic methods. The data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the research show that the soil-bass musical instrument is achordophonic musical instrument, namely musical instruments whose sound source comes from string or strings. The process of making this musical instrument requires quite extraenergy and takes half a day (approximately 6 to 7 hours) through several stages, namely a) the stage of selecting raw materials, such as the fronds of areca nut, type of soil, and supporting wood, b) the manufacturing process by digging the soil then attaching the areca nut fronds to a hole in the ground lined with bamboo, c) the process of tuning a musical instrument by attaching a piece of wood to the string then play it while hitting the string until you find the basic note. The presentation of the soil-bass musical instrument is carried out in a mixed-ensemble by combining several other traditional musical instruments such as juk, benyol, ukulele, drums and dribbles whivh are called “village music“. The form of presentation in village music is in the form of a half circle or can also be parallel, with the position of the bass player at the front of the center, followed by the juk, benyol, ukulele, drum and dribble players at the back to the left of the bass player, meanwhile, the vocalist is behind the bass player to the right or can also be in front (depending on the situation).
