Abstract
The To’is musical instrument is one of the cultural heritages of the Timorese community that holds historical, social, and spiritual values, and functions as a traditional medium of communication in customary and religious life. Amid the currents of modernization, which have led to shifts in function and a decline in the existence of traditional musical instruments, the use of To’is is still maintained in the context of household worship in Rayon Lakujo A of the GMIT Ebenhaezer Matani Congregation, Kupang Regency. This study aims to examine the form of presentation of the To’is musical instrument in household worship and to analyze the meaning of its use for the congregation within cultural and religious contexts in the modern era. This research employs a qualitative approach using an ethnographic method. Data were collected through participant observation, indepth interviews, and documentation. The research subjects included the Head of the Congregational Council, community leaders, observers of the To’is musical instrument, and members of the Rayon Lakujo A congregation. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the presentation of the To’is musical instrument in household worship functions as a call to gather the congregation and as a marker of the beginning of worship, using specific sound patterns that have been culturally agreed upon. The use of To’is is not merely functional but also carries symbolic meanings as a representation of Timorese cultural identity, a medium of spiritual communication, and a means of strengthening a sense of togetherness and the solemnity of worship. Thus, the use of To’is in household worship represents an adaptation of local culture within church liturgical practices as well as a form of preserving cultural heritage in the modern era.
