Abstract
This research is motivated by the importance of interpersonal communication in building and maintaining friendships among university students amidst the dynamic campus environment characterized by academic demands, social challenges, and adaptation to new surroundings. A lack of interpersonal communication skills may lead to misunderstandings, social isolation, decreased learning motivation, and reduced emotional well-being. This research aims to identify and analyze the role of interpersonal communication in friendships among students of the Communication Science Study Program, Class of 2024, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Widya Mandira Catholic University. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving four informants selected using purposive sampling techniques. This research applies Social Penetration Theory as the analytical framework to understand the stages of relationship development through gradual self-disclosure. The findings indicate that interpersonal communication develops through three main layers: the outer layer (exchange of general information and nonverbal communication such as smiling), the semi-private layer (sharing academic experiences, emotional support, and empathy), and the private layer (disclosure of personal problems, vulnerabilities, and deep trust). This process fosters solidarity and transforms friendship into an effective support system for students. In conclusion, interpersonal communication plays a significant role in strengthening the quality of friendships and students’ social well-being. The research recommends enhancing interpersonal communication skills through both academic and non-academic activities to create a supportive and harmonious campus environment.
