Abstract
Communication is the process of conveying messages from the communicator to the communicant through certain media with the aim of creating an effect or changing attitudes. One of the effective mass communication media in conveying social and cultural messages is film, because it contains audiovisual elements that are able to represent social reality through symbols and signs. The film Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts by Mouly Surya is one of the Indonesian films that raises the issue of women's struggle in a patriarchal society. This film not only presents a storyline, but also presents various visual and narrative symbols that represent the values of feminism and resistance against oppression. This study aims to analyze the meaning of women's struggle contained in the film Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts through Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach. The research method used is a qualitative method with semiotic analysis techniques, which focuses on the elements of representamen, objects, and interpretants in the signs that appear throughout the film. The results show that this film represents women's struggle through visual symbols, dialogue, storyline, and division of acts that describe the process of transformation of the main character from a victim to an empowered subject. Thus, the film Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts not only functions as an entertainment medium, but also as a mass communication medium that conveys messages of feminism and criticism of patriarchal culture. The purpose of this study is to "find out the meaning of women's struggle shown in the film Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts using Charles Sanders Pierce's Semiotic Analysis". The results of the study show that women's struggle in this film is represented through the symbolic actions of the character Marlina, such as planning resistance secretly, using weapons as a symbol of power, and courage to face male domination. Scenes of poisoning and murder. However, the attitude of law enforcement officers who are indifferent and blame the victim shows the failure of the state system in protecting women victims of violence. In addition, Marlina's interaction with the character Novi represents women's solidarity as a form of collective strength. However, the presentation of scenes of sexual violence and murder that are quite explicit can be packaged more symbolically or artistically so that Marlina's moral message is more prominent. In addition, a more realistic depiction of the legal and social system can help the audience understand the response of society or authorities to victims of violence. For viewers, this film emphasizes that women's struggles involve more than just physical violence, but also mental toughness, ingenuity, and the ability to confront injustice, enabling the film to serve as both a social reflection and a form of entertainment.
