Abstract

This study aims to improve the harmonization skills of guitar-interest students through the application of the ii–V–I bridge chord progression at SMP Negeri 3 Aesesa. The background of this research is the low level of students’ ability to understand chord relationships and their limited skill in applying functional harmonization in guitar playing. Students tend to memorize basic chord shapes without understanding their harmonic functions within a song. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using a field action research method. The research subjects were ninth-grade students with an interest in guitar at SMP Negeri 3 Aesesa. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The learning process was conducted in several stages, including the introduction of basic chord concepts, understanding harmonic functions, guided practice of the ii–V–I bridge chord progression, and its application in song performance. The results of the study indicate that the application of the ii–V–I bridge chord progression improved students’ understanding of harmonic functions, facilitated smoother chord transitions, and enhanced their ability to accompany songs harmoniously. Although some difficulties were found, such as unstable tempo and challenges in playing minor and dominant chords, these obstacles were overcome through drill and imitation methods applied gradually. Therefore, the application of the ii–V–I bridge chord progression is proven to be an effective alternative guitar learning strategy to improve students’ harmonization skills.
