Abstract

This research examines the symbolization of collective identity and social differentiation through the clothing styles of students at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Widya Mandira Catholic University Kupang. Clothing style functions not only as body covering but also as a medium of symbolic communication that reflects identity, values, and social status in social interactions. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with Georg Simmel's trickle-down theory approach, which emphasizes three main concepts: imitation (lower classes mimicking elite trends for social mobility), differentiation (elites innovating to maintain superiority), and trickle effect (the spread of symbolic meanings to the wider society). Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation involving six student informants from three study programs (Development Economics, Management, and Accounting). The research findings are expected to explain how students use clothing style as a symbol in forming collective identity while simultaneously affirming social differentiation within the campus environment. This research contributes to the development of communication science, particularly the study of symbolic communication and social interaction, and provides practical understanding for campus administrators in comprehending the socio-cultural dynamics of students.
