Abstract

The song Buta Bête tells the story of the origin of a village or territory inhabited by humans. Buta means mud, and Bete means dry. Thus, Buta Bete literally means “dried mud,” referring to soil that has lost its moisture and become hard. Symbolically, Buta Bete represents the beginning of life and the formation of human settlements. In the narrative contained within the song, it is told that the people who survived a great flood were the ones who later took control of the area. These individuals became known as tribal chiefs or Tuan Tana, traditional leaders who hold authority over the land.The problem addressed in this research is: What is the meaning of the lyrics of the Buta Bete song for the people of Horowura Village, Adonara Tengah District, East Flores Regency?This study aims to analyze the meaning of the lyrics of the Buta Bete song for the people of Horowura Village, Adonara Tengah District, East Flores Regency. The research uses a qualitative approach with an ethnographic method. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation.The results of the study show that the lyrics of the Buta Bete song contain historical, religious, and local wisdom meanings that reflect the cultural identity of the Lamaholot community. The musical elements combine characteristics of traditional music with the regional pop style of Lamaholot.
