Abstract
Bai To’an chanting is a sacred oral tradition performed in the death rituals of the Fulur Village community and is exclusively chanted by twelve noble clans (royal clans). This study examines three research questions: (1) What is the form of presentation of Bai To’an chanting in death rituals in Fulur Village? (2) What is the spiritual meaning of Bai To’an chanting in the death rituals of Fulur Village? (3) What is the role of Bai To’an chanting in death rituals in Fulur Village? The objectives of this, (1) research are to describe the form of presentation of Bai To’an chanting in death rituals in Fulur Village, (2) to analyze its spiritual meaning, and (3) to identify its role in the death ritual process. This study employs a qualitative approach using ethnographic methods. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with key informants, and documentation. The findings indicate that Bai To’an chanting is performed orally without musical accompaniment, in a circular formation led by the Mako’an and followed by customary elders (Matas Mone Mil), and is presented over seven consecutive nights during the death ritual. The spiritual meaning of this chant lies in its function as a medium of communication with the ancestors and as a means of guiding the soul toward the ancestral realm. The roles of Bai To’an include: (1) strengthening family identity and genealogy; (2) serving as a medium connecting humans and ancestors; (3) facilitating the release of the soul; and (4) acting as a vehicle for the transmission of customary values. Through this chanting tradition, the Fulur Village community preserves cultural identity and local wisdom passed down from generation to generation.
