Abstract
This study examines the meaning of symbolic communication of odd numbers in the selection of participants and the process of the rio raki re'e ritual carried out by the people of Kedebodu Village, East Ende District, Ende Regency. The rio raki re'e ritual is one of the traditional death rites that is still practiced today and is an important part of the social life and beliefs of the local community. The use of odd numbers and the involvement of participants in this ritual are not merely customary rules, but contain symbolic values related to the relationship between living humans, spirits of the deceased, ancestors and Nggae Dewa (Highest Being). The purpose of this study is to explain the symbolic meaning of odd numbers in the selection of participants and the process of carrying out the rio raki re'e ritual. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews and observations. The theory used in this study is George H. Blumer's Symbolic Interactionism theory, which emphasizes three aspects: meaning, language, and thought. The research results show that the odd number symbol in the Rio Raki Re'e ritual is interpreted as a symbol related to the world of spirits and ancestors. Odd numbers are believed to be a form of respect for the deceased and are an important part of every stage of the ritual. The process of selecting ritual participants is carried out based on customary provisions passed down through generations, involving family members and certain figures considered to understand the customs. This process reflects the community's adherence to customary rules and strengthens social solidarity within the community. This research recommends that the community maintain and preserve the Rio Raki Re'e ritual as a cultural heritage, and conduct documentation and further study so that the meaning and practices of this custom can be passed on to the younger generation.
