Abstract
This study explores the symbolic communication embedded in the May 13 Devotion to the Virgin Mary in Lewolaga Village, Titehena District, East Flores Regency. The devotion is seen not only as a routine religious practice but also as a meaningful expression of faith that integrates religious symbols with local cultural values. The study aims to provide a deeper understanding of how symbolic communication operates within this devotional practice. A qualitative approach with a cultural communication study method was employed. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The study is guided by George Herbert Mead’s Symbolic Interactionism, focusing on the interconnected aspects of mind, self, and society. The findings reveal that symbols such as the statue of the Virgin Mary, the Holy Sacraments, candles, prayers, songs, and ritual movements like walking and kneeling function as channels for expressing faith, devotion, and reverence to God. Personally, the devotion shapes self-awareness and religious identity, while socially, it strengthens solidarity, togetherness, and the continuity of faith traditions. The May 13 Devotion can thus be understood as a practice of symbolic communication uniting spiritual, personal, and social dimensions within Lewolaga’s religious and cultural context. Future studies are encouraged to examine similar devotional practices in other regions with diverse perspectives to enrich the understanding of symbolic communication in religious and local cultural settings.
