Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of mastering proper vocal techniques in performing monophonic liturgical music, particularly Gregorian chants, which are characterized by free rhythm and flowing melody. The primary focus of this study is to analyze the application of phrasing and articulation techniques in singing the Gregorian chant Crux Fidelis by the Unisono Choir of third-semester students in the Music Education Study Program at the Catholic University of Widya Mandira (UNWIRA) Kupang. The central problem addressed is how students can translate sacred Latin texts into correct musical forms through musical phrasing and clarity of pronunciation (articulation). The research method employed is descriptive qualitative. Data were collected through participatory observation during ten rehearsal sessions, audio-visual documentation, and literature review. The learning process implemented the demonstration method and centered practice (drill), where the researcher took an active role in providing direct examples of diaphragmatic breathing techniques to support legato, reading numerical notation adapted from the original notation, and pronouncing Latin diction in accordance with ecclesiastical phonetic rules. The results of the study indicate that in the initial stages, students faced significant obstacles in maintaining breath continuity during phrasing, and there was frequent lack of clarity in articulation on syllables with melisma (multiple notes on a single syllable). However, through the consistent application of the demonstration method, students showed improvement in: (1) the accuracy of musical phrasing that does not interrupt the meaning of the text; (2) clarity of articulation so that the liturgical message of Crux Fidelis is purely conveyed; and (3) uniformity of sound (blending) in a unisono format. This study concludes that mastering phrasing and articulation is not merely a technical musical matter but an essential element in achieving aesthetic quality and spirituality in Gregorian music. This success heavily depends on the effectiveness of the demonstration method in bridging Western music theory with the traditional musical practices of the Catholic Church.
