Abstract

A'O is one of the traditional songs of the Kedang people that is alive and passed down orally in the context of traditional ceremonies, one of which is the Poan Kemer ceremony. This song not only functions as entertainment, but also as a medium for conveying advice, reminding kinship genealogy, as well as a means of prayer and respect for ancestors. The problems raised in this study are 1) What is the form and musical structure of the A'O song performed by the Kedang people in Meluwiting Village, Omesuri District, Lembata Regency 2) What is the philosophical meaning of the perception and participation of the Kedang people contained in the lyrics of the A'O song. This study aims to 1) Study the form and musical structure of the A'O song performed by the Kedang people, 2) Reveal the philosophical meaning of the perception and participation of the Kedang people contained in the A'O song in Meluwiting Village, Omesuri District, Lembata Regency. This study uses a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods. Data collection techniques include field observations, interviews with informants, and audio-visual documentation. The results of the study indicate that the form of the A'O song is composed of traditional Kedang pantun texts which generally consist of four lines in one stanza, with meanings that are understood as a whole and not taken literally. The repetition pattern is divided into consistent refrain repetitions and flexible pantun repetitions, depending on the style of the singer. The way of singing the A'O song involves a single singer and community participation. The social function and cultural context of the A'O song are evident in its role as a means of togetherness of the Kedang community in carrying out traditional ceremonies. The musical structure of the A'O song is non-metric and flexible, where the melody follows the flow of the Kedang language, the rhythm is formed from the relationship between the text and melody, and the tempo tends to be slow and adjusts to the ritual atmosphere. The A'O song is presented collectively through the division of roles between the single singer and joint participation in the chorus. The philosophical meaning of the A'O song reflects the values of brotherhood, togetherness, respect for lineage, and the Kedang community's outlook on life that emphasizes harmonious relationships between humans and with ancestors. Thus, the A'O song can be understood as a traditional song of the Kedang people which has a unique musical form and structure, and contains philosophical meaning in the social and cultural life of the Kedang people.
