Abstract

Expansive clay soil exhibits high shrinkage and swelling properties due to changes in water content, potentially causing damage to building and infrastructure construction. This condition is common in Tuapukan Village, Kupang Regency, the sampling location for this study. Soil improvement efforts were carried out through a stabilization method using a combination of rice husk ash (ASP) and hydrated lime as additives. This study aimed to analyze the effect of ASP and lime addition on the shear strength of expansive clay soil, determine the optimum mixture composition, and evaluate changes in cohesion (c) and angle of internal friction (φ). The mixture variations used were T0 (control), K6 (6% lime), T1 (4% lime + 2% ASP), T2 (3% lime + 3% ASP), and T3 (2% lime + 4% ASP), with a total stabilization material content of 6% of the dry weight of the soil. Testing was conducted in the laboratory using the Direct Shear Test method. The results showed that the addition of a combination of ASP and lime improved the soil shear strength parameters compared to the original soil condition. This improvement occurs due to the pozzolanic reaction between the silica in rice husk ash and the calcium from lime, which forms a binding compound, thereby improving soil structure and increasing its stability. Certain combinations provide more optimal cohesion and internal friction angle values than other variations.
