Abstract

The phenomenon of the Gig Economy has fundamentally transformed the global employment landscape, offering appealing flexibility and autonomy, especially for millennials and Generation Z. In Kupang City, with its potential for a technologically adaptive young generation, this work model is highly relevant for research. This study aims to identify the supporting factors for the success of the Gig Economy among the youth in Kupang, utilizing a qualitative method through in-depth interviews with practitioners. Aspects explored include motivation, challenges, support, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats, self- development strategies, professional networks, competition, flexibility, autonomy, the role of technology, and future outlook of the Gig Economy in Kupang. The research findings indicate that the success of the Gig Economy in Kupang City is influenced by a combination of internal and external factors. Flexibility and autonomy emerge as key attractions that drive individuals to opt for this work model. Adaptability, self-reliance, and a motivation for continuous learning are identified as major strengths supporting success. Challenges such as intense competition and income uncertainty are overcome through service diversification, quality improvement, and the establishment of robust professional networks. Technology plays a crucial role as a primary facilitator, opening access to opportunities and streamlining communication and collaboration. In conclusion, the success of the Gig Economy among millennials and Generation Z in Kupang is underpinned by individuals' ability to optimally leverage technology, adapt to changes, and proactively develop themselves. Flexibility, autonomy, and an entrepreneurial spirit are the main pillars supporting the sustainability of this work model, further bolstered by strong collaboration and professional networks. The Gig Economy in Kupang is projected to continue its growth in the future, driven by continuous technological innovation and the preference of the younger generation for dynamic and independent work models.
