Abstract
Students of the Music Education Study Program at UNWIRA Kupang generally possess good vocal abilities; however, many of them still experience difficulties in utilizing the chest register optimally. As a result, their voices often sound flat, lack power, or become unstable in low and middle registers. In addition, there is a lack of awareness in utilizing the characteristics of the chest register as a means of emotional expression and song interpretation. This study is based on two research questions: How is the process of improving singing ability through the use of the chest register among vocal-major students in semesters III and V of the Music Education Study Program at UNWIRA Kupang? What are the benefits of improving chest register ability on vocal quality, emotional expression, and song interpretation among vocal-major students in semesters III and V of the Music Education Study Program at UNWIRA Kupang? The objectives of this study are: To identify the process of improving singing ability through the use of the chest register among vocal-major students in semesters III and V of the Music Education Study Program at UNWIRA Kupang. To describe the effects of improving chest register ability on vocal quality, emotional expression, and song interpretation among vocal-major students in semesters III and V of the Music Education Study Program at UNWIRA Kupang. This research employs a qualitative approach using the field action method and applies Drill, Imitation, and Demonstration as learning methods. The research subjects consist of four students. Data were collected through observation, field practice, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that the process of improving singing technique through the use of the chest register was effectively implemented over ten face-to-face sessions, focusing on the initial understanding of the chest register concept, chest resonance, application in the song Syukur, articulation, breath control, intonation, and expression. The improvement was marked by a fuller, more powerful, and more stable vocal tone. Although students initially experienced difficulties in breath control, music notation reading, pitch transitions, and expression, continuous practice through direct demonstration and imitation enabled them to overcome these challenges and improve their ability to apply the chest register in singing.
