Abstract

Saxophone learning is a teaching and learning process that emphasizes mastering basic techniques as the main foundation in producing sound quality and musicality of the game. Embouchure and tonguing techniques have an important role in playing the saxophone, but based on initial observations, saxophone students of the Music Education Study Program at UNWIRA Kupang still have difficulty in mastering these techniques optimally. The problems in this study are (1) how is the process of introducing embouchure and tonguing techniques on the saxophone through the song Let It Be; and (2) what factors influence the process of introducing these techniques. This study aims to (1) determine the process of introducing embouchure and tonguing techniques on the saxophone through the song Let It Be, (2) to determine the factors that influence the process of introducing these techniques. This study is descriptive qualitative. The research method used is field action. The research subjects consisted of three saxophone students. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, tests (pre-test and post-test), and documentation. The results of the study showed that (1) the learning process was carried out in stages through basic technique exercises, etudes, and direct application to the song Let It Be using drill and imitation methods; and (2) the learning outcomes showed a significant increase in saxophone playing ability. The pre-test score was in the poor category, while the post-test results increased to the very good category. Thus, the introduction of embouchure and tonguing techniques through the song Let It Be was effective in improving students' saxophone playing skills.
