Abstract

Mathematics is one of the subjects that plays an important role in the world of education. This reality can be seen from the mathematics subject which is always presented from the basic education level to the higher education level. One of the abilities that must be mastered by students in mathematics is the ability to communicate in mathematics. This can be seen from the NCTM (National Council Of Theacher Mathematics) recommending five main basic competencies, namely Problem Solving, Communication, Connection, Reasoning, Representation). The formulation of the problem in this study is how students' mathematical communication skills in solving mathematical problems in the material of the two-variable linear equation system, with the aim of describing the students' mathematical communication skills in solving mathematical problems in the material of the two-variable linear equation system. The indicators in this study are: Ability to express mathematical ideas through writing, Ability to understand and interpret mathematical ideas and Ability to use mathematical ideas and symbols and describe them into mathematical models that are easy to understand and interesting. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive type of research. Triangulation of data sources in this study was carried out in two ways, namely a written test and an interview conducted on the same day. Triagulation is carried out by matching the test results with the interview results. Meanwhile, the data analysis technique was carried out by providing a test in the form of an essay to make it easier to see the mathematical communication skills of junior high school students in grade VIII on the material of the two-variable linear equation system. Based on the results of the study, students with high mathematical skills were able to meet the three indicators of mathematical communication skills, while students with medium mathematical skills were able to meet the three indicators of mathematical communication skills but there was an error from the subject because the result of number one was wrong and students with low mathematical skills could not meet the three indicators of communication skills.
