Abstract

Communication continues to evolve alongside technological advancement, and in the digital era, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become one of the most important sources of information for students in supporting their learning process. This phenomenon has given rise to diverse perceptions among students regarding the effectiveness and reliability of AI as a learning information medium. This study aims to describe the perceptions of students in the Communication Studies Program, Class of 2022, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Unwira, regarding the use of AI as a learning information medium, employing Sobur's perception theory which consists of three stages, namely selection, interpretation, and finalization. A qualitative method with a case study approach was applied through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving four informants who are active users of ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, with data analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings reveal that at the selection stage, students choose AI platforms based on ease of use and availability of references according to their specific needs. At the interpretation stage, students verify information obtained from AI against credible sources such as books and scientific journals as a reflection of their critical thinking ability. At the finalization stage, students conclude that AI is effective in providing quick responses and explaining complex material, despite its tendency to produce generalized information and the risk of fostering dependency if not used wisely. Overall, students hold a wise and balanced perception, positioning AI as a complementary tool that enriches the learning process rather than a replacement for traditional learning sources. Future research is recommended to expand the number of informants from various study programs and examine the direct impact of AI usage on the quality of student learning outcomes.
