Abstract
Violence against women is one of the social problems that still occurs and is often influenced by patriarchal culture and social norms that place women in a subordinate position. The film Women From Rote Island by Jeremias Nyangoen is a form of communication media that represents this reality through the lives of women in Rote society. This study aims to analyze the representation of feminist values in the film Women From Rote Island using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques in the form of documentation of scenes in the film and literature study. The data obtained are analyzed through three levels of meaning according to Roland Barthes, namely denotation, connotation, and myth. The results of this study indicate that the film Women From Rote Island presents a series of violent events experienced by women in family and traditional community environments. Violence is not only present in the form of physical violence, but is also interpreted as a way for society to regulate women through customary pressure, social stigma, and patriarchal relations. The representation of feminism in this film is dominated by radical feminism, which views violence as a result of patriarchal power, and liberal feminism, which is reflected in women’s efforts to fight for justice and legal protection. Overall, the film Women From Rote Island presents violence against women as a structural problem legitimized by social norms and cultural myths. This film becomes a social criticism of a system that normalizes gender injustice and emphasizes the importance of feminist awareness in dismantling unequal power relations.
