Abstract

This thesis is entitled: The Symbolic Meaning of Betel Nut in the “Oa Feto” Engagement Ceremony (Case Study of Traditional Marriage of the Uma Beikati Betun Malaka Tribe). The main problem in this study is, how is the symbolic meaning of betel nut in the “oa feto” engagement ceremony as the identity of the Uma Beikati Tribe of Malaka Regency. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. While the method used is a case study. The meaning of this tradition uses the theory of symbolic interactionism according to George Herbert Mead. In this study there are three indicator structures namely Mine, Self and Society. The results of the study show that the elements of mind, self and society have the same understanding of the symbolic meaning of betel nut in the oa feto engagement ceremony in the uma beikati tribe. Overall, this study concludes that in general, betel nut in the oa feto engagement ceremony in the Uma Beikati tribe has a symbolic meaning that is strongly attached to the local customary and cultural value system. Betel nut functions as a traditional communication medium that signals the good intentions, sincerity and respect of the male family in conveying the intention of proposing to the female family in a polite and dignified manner. This research suggests that the Uma Beikati tribal community should continue to maintain and preserve the betel nut ceremony as a cultural heritage, while adapting the delivery of its values to the younger generation so that this tradition is not lost to the times.
