Abstract
Air quality in poultry houses often deteriorates due to the accumulation of ammonia (NH₃) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) gases, which can cause respiratory disorders, stress, decreased productivity, and even livestock mortality. Manual monitoring tends to be inaccurate and delayed; therefore, an automatic system capable of providing rapid air quality information is required. This study aims to design an Internet of Things (IoT)-based air quality monitoring system to detect NH₃ and CO₂ concentrations in real time and provide early warnings to farmers. The system utilizes MQ-137 and MQ135 sensors connected to an ESP32 microcontroller, equipped with an LCD display, a buzzer as a local alarm, and Telegram notifications. The test results show that the system can classify conditions into SAFE, WARNING, and DANGER levels. Under normal air conditions, CO₂ ranges from 900–940 ppm and NH₃ from 24–25 ppm (SAFE). Increasing CO₂ to approximately 1900 ppm results in a WARNING status. NH₃ testing produces 43 ppm (WARNING) and 84 ppm (DANGER), triggering alarms and notifications with a response time of 1–3 seconds. The initially high reading of the MQ-137 sensor in clean air can be resolved through potentiometer adjustment to stabilize the measurement. Overall, the system is feasible for poultry house air quality monitoring, provided proper sensor calibration is performed.
