Abstract
The fatherless phenomenon is a condition without the presence of a father, either physically, emotionally, or psychologically, which can affect communication patterns in romantic relationships. This study aims to identify and understand the fatherless phenomenon in the formation of communication patterns in the romantic relationships of male and female Communication Science students enrolled in 2022. The approach used is a case study with a descriptive qualitative research design. Primary data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. This study applied the Attachment theory developed by Mary Ainsworth to reveal communication patterns in romantic relationships influenced by a fatherless background. The results show that fatherless conditions in the formation of dating communication patterns will be healthy, stable, and secure if there is a substitute figure. Unstable communication patterns are influenced by fear of abandonment, anxiety, and avoidant communication patterns that are closed and lack balance, influenced by trust issues. This study confirms that female students are more cautious in interacting with men, more selective in choosing men as partners, and have trust issues with men, thus requiring the role of the father as a mediator within the family. As a recommendation, male and female students with a fatherless background should be aware of the communication patterns that occur when opening up to form healthier and more stable dating relationships.
