Abstract

The Sabunese lontar sugar home industry is a vital sector supporting the economy and cultural identity of the community in Sabu Raijua Regency, particularly in West Sabu District. This study aims to describe the business overview, analyze income levels, identify business challenges, and formulate development strategies for the Sabunese Lontar Sugar home industry. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection was conducted through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, totaling 25 respondents who are Sabunese Lontar Sugar business owners in West Sabu District. Data analysis was performed using cost analysis, revenue analysis, and income analysis. The results show that the workforce is dominated by males (100%) due to high occupational safety risks, with the majority aged 41-50 years and possessing extensive business experience. Economically, this business is proven profitable and viable. The average total production cost per month is IDR 1,865,840 and the average gross revenue reaches IDR 5,760,000 per month. Consequently, the average net income obtained by business owners is IDR 3,894,160 per month, which is above the Regency Minimum Wage (UMK). Despite being profitable, the industry faces structural challenges including high occupational safety and health (K3) risks due to a lack of adequate protective equipment, climate dependence (seasonality), an oligopsonistic market structure with low bargaining power for farmers, and firewood scarcity. Recommended strategies include product diversification (granulated lontar sugar/gula semut), marketing modernization through digital technology and improved packaging, and risk mitigation through the use of appropriate safety equipment.
