Abstract

This thesis is entitled Group Communication Patterns in the San Jose Kupang Choir (Case Study on the San Jose Choir). In communication, one type of communication that has a crucial role in the life of every individual as a social being is group communication. In the context of groups, communication is the lifeblood that allows for coordination, decision-making, conflict resolution, and the formation of collective identity This study applies Joseph A. Devito's Communication Pattern Theory to analyze the communication patterns that occur in the San Jose Choir, as well as Ernest Bormann's Theory of Symbolic Convergence to examine unity and togetherness in the formed group. The approach used is a case study with a qualitative descriptive type. Primary data was obtained through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The results showed that the communication patterns in the San Jose Choir were a combination of wheel patterns and modified structure star patterns, with symbolic convergence elements intertwined face-to-face as well as online, which was proven to strengthen group cohesion. This study recommends that further studies can be conducted in a more in-depth study to explain how communication patterns and symbolic convergence influence the sustainability of a group.
