Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the profile of student understanding in solving matrix determinant problems. The main focus of the research is to map students' abilities based on two types of understanding: instrumental understanding and relational understanding. Instrumental understanding refers to the ability to apply formulas and procedures mechanically, while relational understanding emphasizes the ability to link concepts and understand the underlying logical reasons. This research is a descriptive qualitative study. The research subjects consisted of six students from the Mathematics Education Study Program at Widya Mandira Catholic University, Kupang, taken from semesters 3, 5, and 7 using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through a written test in the form of matrix determinant essay questions and in-depth interviews to explore the subjects' thinking processes. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study show that the majority of subjects tend to have instrumental understanding. This is indicated by:Students are able to use the Sarrus method or cofactor expansion procedurally but do not understand the reason why the method is used or the origin of the operational signs, students experience difficulties when faced with problems that require the use of matrix determinant properties, especially if the problems involve algebraic variables rather than numerical valuesand there is a tendency for students to memorize steps of resolution without understanding the interrelationships between concepts, causing them to fail in solving variations of problems that differ from the memorized routine procedures. This study concludes that students' mastery of concepts is still limited to procedural skills and has not yet reached the depth of relational understanding that allows for creative and systematic problem-solving.
