Abstract

The Kedde traditional ceremony is one of the important traditions in the life of the Southwest Sumba community which is still carried out and passed down from generation to generation. In its implementation, the Talla musical instrument has a very important role as a ritual accompaniment and a marker of the stages of the traditional procession. The problems raised in this study are 1) how is the pattern of playing the Talla musical instrument in the Kedde traditional ceremony in Kadi Roma Village, Wewewa Tengah District, Southwest Sumba Regency, and 2) how is the function of playing the Talla musical instrument and the implementation of the Kedde ceremony in the context of local community culture. This study aims to 1) analyze the pattern of playing the Talla musical instrument in the Kedde traditional ceremony and 2) determine the function of playing the Talla musical instrument and the Kedde ceremony in the context of local community culture. This study uses a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods. Data were collected through observation, interviews, literature studies, and documentation involving traditional leaders, Talla musical instrument players, and communities directly involved in the Kedde ceremony. The research results show that 1) the Talla musical instrument playing pattern is presented in a structured and gradual manner through an ensemble of gongs and drums, where each instrument has a complementary musical function. In the context of funeral customs (patane), several types of Talla accompaniment are found, namely Talla Mate, Talla Kako, and Talla Woleka, which are played according to the stages of the procession and have specific meanings. 2) The function of Talla musical instruments and the Kedde ceremony is integral and normative, where the sound of Talla is inseparable from the slaughter of sacrificial animals as a unified traditional ritual. Thus, Talla musical instruments function not only as ceremonial accompaniment but also as a medium for strengthening social solidarity, comforting bereaved families, and as a means of symbolic communication between humans and ancestral spirits.
