Abstract

A mixed ensemble is a form of musical performance played collectively by combining various types of musical instruments, both modern and traditional, within a group setting. In practice, each player is required to master their instrument while maintaining sound balance among instruments, demonstrating cohesiveness at the beginning and ending of the performance, and consistently keeping the tempo. The problem addressed in this study focuses on how to improve students’ ability to perform mixed ensemble music through the song Indonesia Pusaka among eleventh-grade students at SMA Santo Arnoldus Janssen Kupang. This research aims to enhance students’ skills in performing mixed ensemble music through structured practice and learning of the song. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using a field action method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The instruments used during the practice sessions included melodica, recorder, classical guitar, keyboard, maracas, bass guitar, and cajón. The findings indicate a significant improvement in students’ ability to perform mixed ensemble music. The training process was conducted in three stages: the initial stage (participant recruitment and explanation of objectives and activity plans), the core stage (intensive practice of each instrument based on the arrangement of the song Indonesia Pusaka, starting from the introduction section, conducted from the second to the eighth meeting), and the final stage (video recording of the final performance as documentation). Based on the research findings and discussion, students were able to perform the mixed ensemble by maintaining sound balance among instruments, demonstrating cohesiveness in playing, and keeping a steady tempo. Therefore, it can be concluded that the improvement of mixed ensemble music performance through the song Indonesia Pusaka among eleventh-grade students of SMA Santo Arnoldus Janssen Kupang was successfully implemented and contributed positively to the development of extracurricular activities at the school.
