Abstract
Traditional musical instruments are cultural heritages that are born and developed in a particular region. One of these is the traditional musical instrument Kadiding, which is a cultural heritage from Kampung Reta, Desa Pura Selatan, Kecamatan Pulau Pura, Kabupaten Alor. This instrument is usually used by the local community as a form of entertainment while guarding the fields at night. However, the existence of this musical instrument is now on the brink of extinction due to the lack of knowledge among the local community about the techniques of playing and making the Kadiding. Therefore, the researcher aims to conduct an in-depth study of the organology of the traditional musical instrument Kadiding, so that knowledge about the techniques of making and playing Kadiding can be passed on to future generations and serve as a reference for efforts to preserve this traditional musical instrument. This research uses a qualitative approach and ethnographic methods, involving direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation to obtain comprehensive data. The qualit ative data analysis techniques used include data reduction, data presentation, and verification or conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the process of making the Kadiding involves several important stages, namely: first, selecting slightly older bamboo to produce a good sound and ensure the strength and durability of the instrument. Second, processing the bamboo by cutting and shaping it according to the desired size and shape. Third, forming the strings by carving the bamboo surface to create the strings. Fourth, making sound resonance holes to produce a good sound. Sound adjustment is done by arranging the supports so that the Kadiding can produce the desired sound. Playing techniques of the Kadiding require good skills, especially in the basic techniques of playing the instrument to produce beautiful sounds. Additionally, the sound characteristics of the Kadiding, its elements, functions, and history can serve as important references in the efforts to preserve and enhance knowledge about the Kadiding. This ensures that the traditional musical instrument Kadiding can continue to be passed on and enjoyed by future generations, in line with the ongoing process of cultural development.
