Abstract

The activity of whale-hunting which is performed by the whale-hunters of the people of the village of Lamalera at the District of Lembata is a ritualistic and basic activity to provide daily “bread-and-wine” for the whole people. It is also very well-known worldwide. The traditional rituals combined with the religious practices of the Catholic faith which are held by the people consist of many phases, namely, the preparation which is held on the land-side, the seafaring of the hunters on traditional peledang, the spearing of the whale by the lamafa, bringing ashore the captured whale, cutting the whale and distributing it to the people, and thanksgiving ceremony. Baleo dance is a dance inspired by the activities of whale-hunting which depicts all the phases held by the Lamalera people. The research questions addressed here are 1) How is the performing of the Baleo dance, and 2) What are meanings depicted by the dance. The aims of the research are to describe the form of performance of the Baleo dance, and to comprehend the meanings depicted by the dance. The data were collected using the techniques of observation, interview to the informen, and documentation. The data were then analyzed qualitatively to dig out and to describe the form of performance and the meanings of the dance. The research findings are that at the preparation phases, many rituals were held at several sites such as Tobu Name Fate, Lika Telo, on Mount Labalekan, whale-calling ritual at Fat Koteklema, Labaktuko, Unakoker, Bata Ballamaik, and at Lamalera Beach. The courages to seafare on little boats with traditional equipments clearly tell us how tenacious are the people of Lamalera to manage and provide their daily lives. The captured whale were then dragged ashore to be cut and distributed justly to the whole people of Lamalera, especially to the needies and the widows. The Baleo dance depicts the meaning of togetherness, cooperation, hope and prayer, courages and tenacies, socially distributive justice which are carried out by the people of Lamalera.
