Abstract
This study examines the transformation in form, function, and meaning of the Bonet dance from its traditional roots to its modern performance context in the community of Anin Village, Amanatun Selatan Subdistrict, South Central Timor Regency. The Bonet dance, which originally held ritualistic, social, and spiritual functions, has undergone changes due to the influence of globalization, becoming part of contemporary performance arts. The research questions in this study are: (1) What is the current form of the Bonet dance performance in Anin Village during the era of globalization? This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using ethnographic methods. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving local communities, traditional leaders, and Bonet dance practitioners. The findings reveal significant changes in movement, music, costume, and meaning. Traditionally, the Bonet dance was performed spontaneously and collectively in circular formations, accompanied by vocal chants without modern musical instruments, and using traditional woven attire with local ornaments. In modern performances, the dance has adopted structured choreography, modern or recorded musical accompaniments, and visually enhanced costume modifications. The function of the dance has also shifted from a ritual medium to one of entertainment, cultural promotion, and youth education. Despite these transformations, the core cultural values—such as togetherness, ethnic identity, and spiritual expression—remain preserved.
