Abstract
This thesis is entitled "Gratifications and Expectancy Value in the Use of ChatGPT as a Medium for Fulfilling Academic Information (A Case Study of Students Living in kos Kas in Penfui Village, Maulafa District, Kupang City"). Uses and Gratifications Theory explains the fulfillment of needs such as information, entertainment, social interaction, self-expression, and identity strengthening through ChatGPT, while Expectancy Value Theory analyzes the expectations, values, motivations, and costs of using this AI technology. The research employed a qualitative descriptive case study method with primary data derived from in-depth interviews with six students from Nusa Cendana University and Widya Mandira Catholic University, direct observations at the Kas Kos, and documentation such as screenshots of interactions. The results show that ChatGPT fulfills information needs with quick and simple explanations of course materials such as programming, law, agriculture, and government; provides entertainment through jokes or stories to reduce stress; supports social interaction through argument preparation for discussions; facilitates self-expression in writing assignments and proposals; and strengthens identity as independent learners despite the risk of dependency. This use of AI improves learning efficiency in a dynamic boarding environment, with expectations met for basic tasks but limited by accurate local data, and a high value placed on practicality, even though internet data costs are a consideration.
