Abstract

Natoni presented at the Helketa ceremony not only contains elements of poetry (literature) but also has musical elements in it. The problems raised in this study are: 1) how is the presentation of Natoni at the traditional Helketa ceremony in Kuanfatu village, South Central Timor Regency? 2) What are the musical elements in the presentation of Natoni in the Helketa ceremony? The aims off this study are: 1) to determine the process of presenting Natoni in the Helketa ceremony. 2) to determine the musical elements in the presentation of Natoni in the Helketa ceremony. This research is qualitative, the method used in this research is etnography. Data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and documentation studies. The result showed that the presentation of Natoni in the Helketa ceremony was carried out in the river or stream by two groups of the groom’s family and the bride’s family facing Natoni which was then answered by all participants as a sign of agreement with what was expressed by the atonis. Furthermore, the sacrificial animal is killed to be eaten together as a sign of togheterness and khinsip, musical elements in Natoni are tempo, accent, phrasing, dynamics, and compactness. In conclusion, these musical elements are not just aestetics, but ritual communication instruments that unite the human dimension and ancestors in the Dawan tribe tradition.
