Abstract

This thesis is entitled “The Meaning of the Tanis Mate Chant in Traditional Funeral Ceremonies among the Community of Silawan Village, East Tasifeto District, Belu Regency.” It was written by Febriana Dos Santos De Amorlay (17122100) under the supervision of Paskalis Romanus Langgu, S.Sn., M.Arts as Supervisor I and Stanislaus Sanga Tolan, S.Sn., M.Sn as Supervisor II. The Tanis Mate chant is an oral tradition passed down through generations by the people of Silawan Village and is performed during traditional funeral ceremonies as a form of final tribute to the deceased. The chant is delivered in Tetun verses containing lamentations, expressions of grief, prayers, and moral messages that reflect the religious, social, and cultural values of the local community. Tanis Mate has become a distinctive identity of the Tetun community in Silawan Village and holds an important position in funeral traditions. The research problems addressed in this study are: (1) how the Tanis Mate chant is performed within the sequence of funeral rituals among the people of Silawan Village, Belu Regency, and (2) what meanings are contained in the Tanis Mate chant within the funeral tradition. The objectives of this study are: (1) to describe the process of performing the Tanis Mate chant in funeral ceremonies, and (2) to reveal the meanings embedded in the chant among the people of Silawan Village, Belu Regency. This research employs a qualitative ethnographic method with data collection techniques consisting of observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed descriptively to understand the meaning of the chant based on the community’s cultural context. The results show that: (1) the performance process of the Tanis Mate chant in funeral ceremonies begins with an opening chant marking the start of lamentation, continues with the main section expressing sorrow, memories, and loss, and ends with a closing chant symbolizing farewell and prayer. The entire sequence is delivered continuously and adjusted to the ongoing mourning situation. (2) The meanings contained in the Tanis Mate chant indicate that it serves as an expression of deep sorrow, a form of final respect for the deceased (the late Dominika Boe), and a medium for conveying prayers and hopes. The chant also reflects the community’s perspective on death and demonstrates the important role of Tanis Mate in preserving cultural values inherited from their ancestors.
