Abstract

This study examines “The Role of Traditional Markets in Promoting MSME Empowerment at Nangapanda Market, Nangapanda District, Ende Regency”. Traditional markets play a strategic role in encouraging the empowerment of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), including at Nangapanda Market, as they function not only as economic spaces but also as social spaces for local business actors. This study aims to analyze the role of Nangapanda Market in empowering MSMEs using a qualitative method through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving traders and market managers. The analysis is based on Zimmerman (2000) empowerment theory, which emphasizes four main indicators: access to information and training, economic resources, the ability to make independent decisions, and the ability to build networks and collaboration. The results show that Nangapanda Market contributes to increasing the self-confidence and independence of MSME actors, strengthening social and institutional networks among traders, and encouraging active participation of MSMEs in local economic activities. These factors indicate that the existence of traditional markets has a strategic role as a means of empowerment that supports the sustainability of MSMEs at the local level. Thus, traditional markets function not only as places for economic transactions but also as empowerment platforms that enhance the capacity and sustainability of MSMEs at the local level.
