Abstract

Lao Dalan songs are traditional chants that have been passed down from generation to generation and are still used in various community activities, such as working, traveling, and other social activities. The problems addressed in this study are: (1) What is the form of the Lao Dalan songs found in the daily life of the people of South Babulu Village, Kobalima District, Malaka Regency? (2) What are the functions of Lao Dalan songs in the life of the people of South Babulu Village, Kobalima District, Malaka Regency, viewed from moral, educational, and social aspects? This study employs a qualitative approach using an ethnographic method. Data collection techniques include observation, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and local community members, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive qualitative analysis. The results show that Lao Dalan songs have a simple musical form, characterized by descending melodies, free rhythm, flexible tempo, and a responsorial structure between a solo singer and a group. In terms of function, Lao Dalan songs serve as a medium for moral education, a means of social communication, a reinforcement of community solidarity, and an expression of the cultural and emotional life of the people of South Babulu Village. This study is expected to contribute to the preservation of local cultural heritage and to provide input for the development of studies on traditional music and ethnomusicology.
