Abstract

This study is entitled “The Use of YouTube Videos as a Learning Medium to Improve EFL Students' Speaking Skills”. The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of YouTube videos as a learning medium to improve EFL students' speaking skills and identify the aspects of speaking that show the most consider improvement. This study applied Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles with 14 grade XII students from the Interior Design program at SMK Negeri 4 Kupang. Data were obtained through speaking test, including pre-test, post-test 1 and 2, supported by classroom observation sheets. Students' speaking skills were evaluated based on five components: fluency, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and coherence. The findings showed consistent improvement in students' speaking performance after the implementation of YouTube-based instruction. Student scores increased from 40–78 on the pre-test to 63–84 on post-test 1, and continued to increase to 72–92 on post-test 2. Improvements were seen in all speaking components, with positive improvements in fluency, vocabulary, and coherence. Observational data also showed an increase in student engagement, confidence, and active participation during speaking activities. The use of YouTube videos proved to be an effective instructional medium for improving EFL students' speaking skills. Therefore, English teachers are encouraged to integrate YouTube videos into speaking instruction to provide authentic language exposure and support students' oral communication development.
