Abstract

The teaching of violin vibrato technique for university students is generally conducted through imitation based on techniques that have been previously learned, without paying attention to musical symbols or developing an independent understanding ofplaying patterns. One relevant approach that can be applied in violin performance is the systematic implementation ofvibrato technique. The research problems addressed in this study are as follows (1)How is the process of implementing violin vibrato technique in the song "Kulihat Ibu Pertiwi" by Ismail Marzuki for third-semester violin-major students at Widya Mandira Catholic University (Unwira) Kupang(2) What difficulties are encountered by third-semester violin-major students at Unwira Kupang in applying the vibrato technique in the song "Kulihat Ibu Pertiwi" by Ismail Marzuki (3)What solutions can be implemented in applying the violin vibrato technique in the song "Kulihat Ibu Pertiwi" by Ismail Marzuki to improve the violin performance skills of third-semester violin-major students at Unwira Kupang This study aims to (1)describe the process of implementing the violin vibrato technique in the song "Kulihat Ibu Pertiwi" by Ismail Marzuki for third-semester violin-major students at Unwira Kupang (2)describe the difficulties faced by third-semester violin-major students at Unwira Kupang in applying the vibrato technique in the song; and (3) explain the solutions that can be used in implementing the violin vibrato technique through the song "Kulihat Ibu Pertiwi" by Ismail Marzuki in order to improve students' vibrato performance skills. The research employed a qualitative approach using a field research method. The research subjects consisted of ten third-semester violin-major students. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that the implementation ofthe violin vibrato technique in the song "Kulihat Ibu Pertiwi" by Ismail Marzuki was carried out through several stages, beginning with the introduction offinger vibrato and wrist vibrato techniques, followed by demonstrations ofvibrato techniques that were directly applied in violin performance. The learning process included fingering techniques, finger motion, wrist movement, accuracy in finger position changes, maintaining tempo stability, and understanding the overall flow of the song. The difficulties encountered included unstable tempo, challenges in finger transitions, difficulty in wrist movement, and insufficient finger strength when pressing the strings. To address these difficulties, students were guided to follow performance examples and received direct supervision from the researcher, who also acted as the instructor. Students were trained to practice vibrato techniques while directly applying them to the song. The solutions implemented to overcome these challenges included repetitive practice (drill method), demonstrations ofperformance at a slow tempo, and guidance on proper vibrato technique. Therefore, the application of the violin vibrato technique using the song "Kulihat Ibu Pertiwi" proved to be effective in gradually improving students' vibrato performance skills and fostering independent learning.
