Abstract
Klingu Pola is a traditional wind musical instrument made from wrapped lontar leaves. In the past, klingu pola was played during planting and harvesting seasons as a means of communication, to signal the presence of fellow farmers, and as an expression of respect and prayers to God, ancestors, and nature for the crops to grow well and be protected from disease. The problem addressed in this study is: 1) How is the Klingu Pola musical instrument presented in the Helong community of Uitiuh Tuan Village, Semau Selatan District, Kupang Regency 2). What factors influence the shift in the function of the Klingu Pola musical instrument among the Helong ethnic community in Uitiuh Tuan Village, Semau Selatan District, Kupang Regency. This study aims to 1). describe the form of presentation of the Klingu Pola musical instrument, 2). identify and describe the factors that influence the shift in the function of the Klingu Pola musical instrument among the Helong ethnic community in Uitiuh Tuan Village, Semau Selatan District, Kupang Regency. This research uses ethnomusicology and anthropology approaches with ethnographic methods. Data collection techniques are carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research results show that: 1). The presentation form of the Klingu Pola musical instrument in the Helong Tribe community of Uitiuh Tuan Village is reviewed from musical, non-musical, and contextual aspects. The musical elements include a free rhythm, simple melody with a limited range of notes, flexible tempo, varying dynamics, and a distinctive timbre produced by the player's breath. The non-musical elements include performers who play individually as community figures without special costumes, as well as presentations that adapt to time and place. Contextually, Klingu Pola originally functioned in agricultural rituals, but has now developed into a performance for the opening of Lingae dance, religious events, welcoming guests, and cultural festivals 2). The shift in function is influenced by internal and external factors. Internal factors include the declining public interest in learning Klingu Pola musical instruments, the weakening of cultural transmission between generations, and the changing interpretation of sacred elements in tradition. Meanwhile, external factors include the influence of modern culture and globalization, changes in the context of use in religious and cultural activities, and the utilization of traditional music as a symbol of cultural identity.
