Abstract
This study is motivated by the declining understanding among younger generations regarding the values and meanings of Angkalale singing as part of the Banain community’s oral tradition in funeral ceremonies. The research problem focuses on how Angkalale singing is performed in funeral rituals among the Banain community in Bikomi Utara District, North Central Timor Regency, and what meanings are embedded in the song. The objective of this study is to describe the form of performance and analyze the meaning of Angkalale singing in funeral ceremonies among the Banain community. Angkalale is a traditional oral song passed down through generations and plays an important role in expressing grief, honoring the deceased, and strengthening social bonds within the community. This research employs a qualitative approach using an ethnographic method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving traditional leaders, performers, and local community members. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Angkalale singing is performed collectively at the mourning house, usually at night, and accompanied by symbolic activities such as pounding rice (tiut nitu) using a boat-shaped mortar. The performance involves call-and-response singing patterns that reflect social solidarity and communal cooperation. In terms of meaning, Angkalale contains denotative, connotative, and symbolic meanings representing expressions of grief, final respect for the deceased, prayers to God, and beliefs in ancestral spirits. Therefore, Angkalale is not only a form of traditional artistic expression but also serves as a medium for transmitting cultural values, spiritual beliefs, and the identity of the Banain community. This study is expected to contribute to the preservation of local cultural heritage and the development of traditional music research.
