Abstract

This thesis is entitled The Meaning of Playing the Gong Musical Instrument in the Inauguration Ritual of the Hanik Ume Le'u Kolosese Banain Village, North Bikomi District, North Central Timor Regency, by Trifonia Virgiani Kolo (17119141) with supervisor I. Margareta S. I Kaet, S.Pd., M .Pd and supervisor II. Flora Ceunfin, S.Sn., M.Sn. Gong is a traditional musical instrument in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), especially the people of North Central Timor Regency. In each area in TTU Regency, the gongs used have different symbols and meanings. The difference lies in the number of gongs, size, playing technique and the harmony of the sound. The Timor Gong is a traditional musical instrument which has an important role in the Hanik Ume Le'u ceremony procession. The existence of Timorese gong playing has decreased among the younger generation, especially young women who should become gong players. The problems raised in this research are: 1) What is the ritual process of the Hanik ume le'u ceremony which takes place in Banain Village, North Bikomi District, 2) What is the meaning of playing the gong musical instrument in the ritual process of inaugurating the Hanik ume le'u Tua Colosseum in the Village Banain, North Bikomi District. The objectives of this research are 1). To find out and describe the ritual process of the Hanik Ume Le'u ceremony which took place in Banain Village, North Bikomi District, 2). To find out and describe the meaning of playing the gong musical instrument during the ritual process of inaugurating the Hanik ume le'u Tua Colosseum in Banain Village, North Bikomi District. This research uses a qualitative approach using ethnographic methods. Data was collected through observations, interviews and documentation. Data analysis in this research is done by organizing the data into categories, explaining it into units, synthesizing it, arranging it into patterns, choosing what is important and what will be studied, and making conclusions. The results of the research show that in the Inauguration Ritual of the Colossian Hanik Ume Le'u, traditional music produced through gong strikes functions as a communication medium that reminds the struggle and determination of the community in maintaining the continuity of life from generation to generation. The rhythm and tone of the Timorese Gong symbolizes the unique character and identity of the Banain people, such as courage, perseverance and an unyielding spirit. Their culture refers to them as “Atoni Pah Meto,” which describes people with resilience in facing natural challenges and defending their territory and life. Based on the results of this research, it can be concluded that in the Inauguration Ritual of the Colossal Hanik Ume Le'u, traditional music produced through the blows of a gong functions as a communication medium that reminds the struggle and determination of the community in maintaining the continuity of life from generation to generation. The sound of the gong strengthens the spirit of togetherness and solidarity among the community, while awakening a spiritual connection between the Banain people and their ancestors, who are believed to be present and give blessings to the ritual.
