Abstract

The tahan veuk tradition is a customary ritual of the Tunabesi Village community, Malaka Regency, performed as an expression of gratitude for the first harvest, particularly young corn, as well as a form of respect toward God and the ancestors. This tradition has been inherited from generation to generation and is accompanied by traditional utterances rich in symbolic meaning. These utterances function not only as an integral part of the ritual process but also as a medium for conveying moral, spiritual, and social messages that reflect the community’s worldview. The research problems of this study are: (1) how the symbolic meanings of the traditional utterances in the tahan veuk tradition are constructed, and (2) what educational values are embedded within those utterances. This study aims to describe and analyze the symbolic meanings of the traditional utterances and to identify the educational values that contribute to character formation within the community. This research employed a qualitative approach using an ethnographic method to gain an in-depth understanding of the cultural reality of the Tunabesi community. Data were collected through participatory observation of the ritual process, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and community members, and documentation as supporting data. The data were analyzed through systematic stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Semiotic and hermeneutic approaches were applied to interpret the symbols, language expressions, and cultural contexts underlying the traditional utterances. The findings reveal that the traditional utterances in the tahan veuk tradition contain symbolic meanings representing the harmonious relationship between humans, God, ancestors, fellow community members, and nature. The symbols reflect religious values as expressions of faith and gratitude, moral values emphasizing respect and responsibility, social values strengthening solidarity and togetherness, and cultural values preserving identity and tradition. These values possess significant educational dimensions that play an important role in shaping community character, especially among the younger generation. Therefore, the tahan veuk tradition functions not only as a customary ritual but also as an effective medium of cultural education in preserving and transmitting noble values to future generations.
