Abstract

Side friction is one of the primary causes of traffic congestion that significantly affects the capacity and service performance of urban roads, including in Kupang City. This study aims to examine the extent of side friction's influence on the road capacity of Timor Raya Street (in front of SPC Oesapa Barat). The increase in traffic volume and roadside activities, such as vehicles parking and stopping on the road shoulders, serves as the main background for this study to maintain the maximum function of road infrastructure. The research method follows the 2023 Indonesian Road Capacity Guidelines (PKJI). Primary data were collected through direct field surveys over six days, including measurements of traffic volume, travel time or vehicle speed, and identification of side friction frequency. Data processing involved simple linear regression analysis to evaluate the relationship between side friction variables and the road Level of Service (LoS) index. The results show that side friction has a dominant influence in reducing road performance, with the highest frequency reaching a total weight of 1956 on Thursday. This condition causes a decrease in average vehicle speed and places the Level of Service (LoS) in categories C to D, indicating unstable traffic flow. Overall, side friction activities at the research location have narrowed the effective lanes and significantly reduced road capacity.
