Abstract

In the context of growing globalization and modernization, local cultural heritage, especially ritual singing, faces serious challenges. The problem that often arises is that many people today consider ritual chants only as an identity that must be performed during traditional ceremonies and mere entertainment, without understanding the true meaning and value of the chants. The problem formulations in this research are: (1) How is the presentation form of Nggejang singing in the Elak Ntaun traditional ceremony in Lengko Namut Village? (2) What is the meaning contained in the Nggejang singing? (3) What is the value contained in the Nggejang singing? Research Objectives: This research aims to find out the form of Nggejang singing presentation in the Elak Ntaun traditional ceremony and explore the meaning and value contained in this song. Subjects and Informants: This research was conducted in Lengko Namut Village, Elar Sub-district, East Manggarai Regency, by involving various informants consisting of traditional leaders, community leaders, and people directly involved in the implementation of the Elak Ntaun ceremony. This research used a qualitative approach with a qualitative descriptive method. The data collection techniques used were interviews, documentation, and observation. Qualitative data analysis techniques use data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the presentation form of Nggejang singing at the Elak Ntaun ceremony was sung in a circle formation. Before Nggejang is sung, it begins with tuing (advice) which aims to avoid using traditional expressions that offend ancestors and others, and ends with kepok po'e (traditional expression) as an apology to the ancestors if there are words in the poem that are wrong and offensive. This song also has unique verses and has a deep meaning that contains messages and insinuations. Researchers divided it into denotative meaning and connotative meaning. This song also has life values including: (1) Gratitude Value, (2) Care Value, (3) Spiritual Value, (4) Solidarity Value, (5) Tradition Value, (6) Strength Value, and various other life values. Conclusion: The results of this study show that Nggejang singing in the Elak Ntaun traditional ceremony is not only a form of entertainment or cultural identity, but also contains deep meaning and important life values for local communities. Therefore, preserving and understanding local cultural heritage such as nyan-yian Nggejang has important implications for the identity and cultural sustainability of the East Manggarai community.
