Abstract

This research aims to describe the strategies implemented by English teachers in teaching the speaking skills of students at St. Joseph Catholic Junior High School in Kupang and to determine the most commonly used strategies. This study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The subjects of the study consist of three English teachers who are assigned to grades VII and VIII. The findings indicate that each teacher applies different strategies, namely discussion, communication games, and role-playing. The discussion strategy is identified as the most dominantly applied by two out of three teachers, as it is deemed effective in enhancing student engagement, fostering self-confidence, and sharpening critical thinking skills when speaking in English. This study also reveals various challenges in teaching the speaking skill, such as students' low self-confidence, limited vocabulary, and short learning time. However, the educators managed to overcome these various challenges with creative and flexible approaches. The findings from this research are expected to serve as a reference for teachers in determining appropriate teaching strategies for speaking skills according to the characteristics and needs of students.
