Abstract

Pangkalale songs are lamentations and heartfelt melodies woven together in spontaneous words and songs as an expression of deep sadness. Pangkalale can be sung at the time of death using verses in the local Dawan language. Pangkalale originates from the oral tradition of the local community, which considers these lamentations to be more than just ordinary lamentations, but a form of communication with the spirits. This lament is believed to convey prayers and expressions of love to the spirits. The research questions in this study are (1) How is the Pangkalale song performed in the mourning ceremony for the deceased in the community of Supun Village, South Biboki District, and (2) What is the meaning contained in the Pangkalale song in the context of the death mourning ritual? The objectives of this study are (1) to determine the process of singing Pangkalale in mourning ceremonies for the deceased in the community of Supun Village, South Biboki District, and (2) to determine the meaning contained in the Pangkalale lament sung at the time of death in the community of Supun Village, South Biboki District.
