Abstract

The Pa Enu Wee Nu'u traditional ceremony is an important tradition for the people of Wee Pa Tando Village, Southwest Sumba. This research aims to reveal the symbolic meaning of the traditional ceremony using Victor Turner's theory, focusing on indicators of multivocality, condensation of meaning, polysemy, and ambiguity. A qualitative research method was used with a case study approach. The results showed that the Pa Enu Wee Nu'u ceremony has complex and multifaceted meanings, related to the life cycle, fertility, and natural balance. Symbols used in the ceremony, such as coconut, chicken, and cloth, have diverse and interconnected meanings. Multivocal analysis shows that the ceremony has many different meanings for the community, while condensation of meaning shows that these meanings can be unified into a broader concept. Polysemy and ambiguity are also found in the symbolic meaning of the ceremony, indicating the richness and complexity of Wee Pa Tando's culture. This research is expected to contribute to the understanding of the symbolic meaning of traditional ceremonies and the importance of preserving local culture.
