Abstract

Psychological well-being constitutes a fundamental component of both personal welfare and the overall health of society, and therefore demands careful and sustained focus, especially with regard to the early identification of mental disorders. The limited accesses of mental health services and social stigma often hinder people from obtaining an initial diagnosis. Therefore, for designing and implementing a web-based expert system to assisting in the early diagnosis of mental health disorders with Forward Chaining method is the research purpose. System development followed the Expert System Life Cycle (ESLC) stages, encompassing requirement assessment, information gathering, architectural planning, execution, and evaluation. The knowledge base was compiled based on symptoms and rules obtained from experts and related literature, then represented in the form of IF–THEN rules. The diagnosis process was carried out by selecting symptoms by the user to support the inference process using the Forward Chaining method. Test results showed that the expert system was able to provide an effective diagnosis of mental health disorders. Based on the test results, the system achieved an accuracy rate of 80%, making it suitable for use as an initial diagnostic tool and a means of mental health education for the public before further consultation with professionals.
